Skrealization

Something has been missing in my life. I have written about it before, the lack of hobbies etc. After watching the new Girl video last night, I realized that it was skateboarding that is missing. I felt young again, the way a great video makes you want to go skate that very second. Kind of like the way porn motivates you, albeit with two drastically different outcomes. I have been skating since I was 5 years old, but I have not skated more than 5 times in the last couple of years. It is a huge hole in my life that I was not even aware of until last night. I hated skateboarding when it was my job, although I now realize that it is by far the best job in the world, and the guys who do it right deserve all of the credit in the world. I live in LA. I grew up not giving two fucks about movie stars or rock stars. My stars were Chris Miller, Steve Caballero and Mark Gonzalez, closely followed by local stars Mark Roach and Mike Crum. As I got older, and as these guys got older, I didn't see other skateboarders as stars so much. As I was watching the video, anticipating the parts of Rick Howard and Mike Carroll, I realized these guys are fucking stars. As neat as it was to see Owen Wilson in a Girl video, Rick and Mike are the stars of this. It amazed me when I began to think of old H-Street and Blockhead videos, and trying to wonder how these guys are still doing it. Some people were born to skateboard; people like The Gonz, Rick Howard and Jason Lee. Those are the first three that come to mind as looking inherently natural while they are skating. I am excluding the super-pod-people like Koston because I have absolutely no explanation for his talent. SuperNatural, perhaps. All these kids who ride for Girl/Chocolate; I have to wonder if they have any idea how lucky they are. They will never understand what these guys were doing in 1990. If you take the Plan B video and watch any other video that came out in the same time or even a couple of years later, you can get a small understanding of what these guys have done for skateboarding.

I am going down to my local skateshop to buy the memoribilia of my "stars". Only do I buy a Rick Howard or a Mike Carroll.....?
