My nautical fantasy has resurfaced at a good time. The bi-annual, umm wait, bi-annual means every other year. What term means twice a year? Umm, the bi-quarterly Dallas Boat Show is the weekend of the 15th and an encore on the weekend of the 22nd.
I am aware that the name Jason F. King does not yet have clout in the marineworld, and I want the VIP treatment around the Superyachts. I want to go in the aft section of Dallas Market Hall and see the boats that only the uber rich and famous get to see. So I will be attending the show as pseudo-persona:
Travis Spermcount, the Organically Grown Catfish importer/exporter. I inherited the family business started by Grandpa Spermcount and built the worlds largest organic catfish empire. I have the largest collection of fishing poles west of the eastern hemisphere, and am sometimes known to fish with diamond encrusted lures. I am in the process of producing a hip-hop urban themed fishing show that will air simultaneously on BET and Logo. I have won three Okie Noodling competitions and was then forever banned from the sport after I was deemed “overaggressive”. I am married to a black woman.
When I was looking for a link to the story of the teenager fucking/killing “Princess, the Southern Black Peoples Dog” I typed teen + fucks + dog into Google. It took me a minute to realize two things. One, the Feds just Patriot Acted my IP and should be here any minute. Two, I have that auto-complete function turned on in my browswer, and I just know that I am going to let someone at school use my computer and they will search for tepidarium,or something and as soon as they type in “T-E” my computer will offer them “Teen Fucks Dog”.
I really don’t wanna switch schools.
The eminent domain ruling is ridiculous. I think that everyone agrees on that. And nothing makes me happier than this story:
I can’t wait to see how this one plays out.
The domain “dot LA” is available. Imagine if I was to have jason king dot LA, that would be, well, so LA. I think that I may have to register it. I would of course feel bad for all of the blogging Jason Kings of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, of which there are millions, and I am penpals with all of them. But if that bloody web designer steals another one from me, we will have words, and I guarantee you those words will be surrounded with bold font tags, or the cascading style sheet equivalent that I still can’t figure out.
Plus also. How bad does a television show have to be that even though one of your best, oldest friends are on it, you still would rather watch anything else?
Nike uses imagery from Minor Threat.
Did I ever tell you about the times that Ian Mackaye called me at my house? i’m feeling way too carpal tunnelly to type it all right now, but I will tell you that he said “word” a lot.
Google Earth looks amazing. It is graphics/processor heavy, obviously, and will bog down a machine that doesn’t quite have the horsepower to run it; i.e. my laptop.
OK. I did a little more research on this Urban Reserve project. It is a small community off of Hwy 75 and Royal Lane. The area is so-so. The site photo on the UR site is this:
It looks nice. It seems to take advantage of the open green areas that Dallas still has to offer. But then I realized that it is set on White Rock Creek, not White Rock Lake. A creek is basically the equivalent of leaving your water hose running in your back yard for 30 minutes. And I saw some aerials of the site:
The location is rather subpar, considering the space that Dallas still has available. Its proximity to downtown, shopping and major transportation arteries are quite good, but I think that they are going to have a hard time co-existing with the aging sprawl whose backyard they are being built in.
You take the good, you take the bad….
Dallas is a hotbed of development. When you spend some time here, you are overwhelmed by the amount of space that is available; especially coming form a cramped city like Los Angeles. I am struck not only by the size of parking lots but by the size of parking spaces. They are about 50% wider than they are in LA.
All of this space is lending itself to some interesting residential development. The bad news first.
A residential highrise designed by trashcan master Philip Starck called House. I actually (kind of) like the Taschen store(s) of his in Beverly Hills and Paris, but that is mostly commercial interior design. His architectural feats have been less than superb and I will be keeping an eye on this development in my beloved hometown.
And now the good.
From the Urban Reserve website:
Architecture at Urban Reserve is modern, arising from the talents of a select group of regionally and nationally recognized architects. Rejecting historically false or retro styles, the homes of Urban Reserve are of their time and of their place–North Texas in the early 21st century.
From what I can gather, this seems to be a neighborhood of 50 individually designed homes by young architects. The competition chose form two categories:professionall, in this case meaning the architects must be out of school for 10 years or less; and from a pool of current architecture students. I applaud the developer for (I think it is a woman) her push to get young architects involved in what could be a very unique modern residential community.
I am going to try to take a trip down to the White Rock Lake site and snap a few photographs. I am not sure how far along this project is, but I would like to get some pre-groundbreaking photos this trip and, hopefully some “in progress” and “completed” documentation on my future Dallas trips.
