Though I normally would prefer the early 20th Century and somewhat rough-edged charm of the Hollywood YMCA over the big box, super-clean, chain gyms,I have defected. I have been a member of the Y for about 4 years now and despite the strange locker room clientele, semi-shitty racquetball courts (w/ v. little AC), and tiny room of workout machines, I have enjoyed the Y, and kind of a proud member; there was something that really made me happy to be a member of the Hollywood YMCA1.
But. As of today, er, my next billing cycle, I am no longer a member. Even I can’t resist the allure of multiple flat screen TV’s and super Racquetball courts, clean private(-ish) showers, and rows and rows of machines of varying muscle group straining techniques.
But. Really it comes down to price. I was paying $50/month at the Y, which isn’t that bad until you add in the extra $1/day parking that becomes an extra $25/month when all is said and done2.
1Which is surprising due to my disdain for all things religious. For some reason the Young Mens Christian Association never struck me as an overly religious organization, although I may never have seen a Jew there, hmm? And it seems as I get older, the more I tend to understand the idea of religion. When I was young I sort of naively believed in religion, then in my 20’s I became terribly cynical and grew to despise all things religious, but now I get it, kind of. I, at least, understand why people need it, even if I don’t buy it. Long story short, religion is A-OK w/ me.3
2Not to mention the argument w/ the parking attendant that I was pretty sure was going to end w/ me punching him and me being taken to jail at 7:00AM that all began because the smallest bill I had was a 20 and the attendant said that I do this to him all the time, even though this was the first time it had happened.
3Though I do still believe that religion is responsible for most of the really big problems in the world, and in the history of the world.
I don’t feel like writing. My back hurts, I’m busy, eBay is taking up all my time… so I am just going to post some of my favorite photoshoppery from Percenterprises/JFKDC for a few days (or until I feel like it).

This was the 1st “Me Logo” I ever did. It was on the front page of Percenterprises before there was even a blog. Aside from the bad use of the blur tool and the serif font… (WTFuck? I knew Photoshop already when I made this. Hmm. Maybe I was going for the DIYourself look.) Anyway, it’s still probably my favorite one. I was in my 20’s then, but I still have that rubber ducky in my shower today. TTYLater.

Yours Truly w/ Lauren in Austin, NYE 2005/06
My Texan friend Ryan has been emailing me recipes all week in my effort to learn how to cook. It is all part of my plan to become The Perfect Humanâ„¢. I’m 85% there.
I made Mahi-Mahi w/ Couscous and vegetables for myself and my upstairs neighbor last week and it was surprisingly excellent. My neighbor even said, “This is fucking good.” (+/- the word fucking)
Aside from loads of cooking/trips to Trader Joe’s, there hasn’t been a lot going on this week. I have a sore back that is keeping me from gym/racquetball/golf, but with the strict diet that I am on I have lost weight anyhow. I’m also quitting smoking, Take 439. It’s been 5 days.
Work is boring. I just finished up a Hollywood Apt. freelance job, so that’s good.
I’m reading a book that I pulled from my shelf in hopes that it would be so boring it would win a battle with the patch and put me to sleep (it’s totally impossible to sleep while on the patch). It’s written by Morgan Llywelyn and is titled 1916: A Novel of The Irish Rebellion and it is v.v. good. So I have been up until 3AM every night reading it. I generally deplore historical fiction, but this one is good, damn good.
So if you are looking for an early xmas present for me my current interests are:
- Cooking
- Morrissey
- Golf
- Nicotine alternatives
- Sailing
- The Irish Uprising
Should I post some recipes? Holy fuck, now he’s got a food blog.
