I saw Dinosaur Jr. and Band of Horses play at the Wiltern on Saturday night.  Band of Horses are really good live.  But I was there to see Dinosaur Jr.  First things first, you really need to see them live to appreciate what an exceptionally phenomenal guitarist J Mascis is.  And to see them playing with the original lineup was great.  But I couldn’t help drawing parallels between the hair of this show and the previous show I saw, Patti Smith (see a couple of posts below).  The bands and performers I like are getting old.  Patti Smith and J Mascis could easily be sharing the same gray locks that adorn both of their heads.   It made me feel really old to realize that punk bands are gray now.  Can my taste still be cutting edge if the music I like is being made by gray haired people?  I couldn’t help but feel old by association.  Thankfully, Lou Barlow still looks young.

Then I realized that it is pushing 20 years that I have been a Dinosaur Jr.  fan.

As we were leaving, Searcy remarked that due to the color of Mascis’ hair, he would now be referring to them as Dinosaur Sr.  Brilliant.

Life really flies by.

it’s funny that you probably do think that you came up with that hair comparison all by yourself.
