Did Grandma just sing the N-Word?

I saw Patti Smith at the Santa Monica Pier last night. I went with HW and LP and we had wine on the beach and listened for awhile, before being totally renegade and jumping the fence to get closer to Patti. The concert was free it was just too full, hence the fence jumping. You would think Smith’s fans would be peace loving aging baby boomers, but a lot of people there were dicks. I accidentally stepped on a womans toe and she wouldn’t accept my apology; she was super pissed (if you happen to end up here via Google, lady, I would like to retract my apology and offer a “Fuck You” in its place). LP had her arm grabbed by a woman who asked her to “please stop talking” after she whispered three words to me. And then a self-deprecating short dude got extra self-deprecating when HW got in front of him. But the music was amazing. I’m not a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, but Flea was playing bass for Smith which I thought was sweet of him.

While drinking wine on the beach, we discussed the usual things; mostly that Miranda July is more productive than all of us, Miranda July’s connection in the Jeremy Blake / Theresa Duncan deaths, and how I didn’t really like Me and You and Everyone We Know but I do appreciate it. So, yeah, mostly we just talked about Miranda July, who is coincidentally one day older than me.

After the beach we took a cab to a bar in Santa Monica. I don’t know what is happening to me lately. Twice in the past two weeks, I have had a glass of Scotch and the next thing I know I am completely shitcanned. I don’t remember anything from the bar aside from signing up to karaoke Maps and not having my name called… then I woke up on LP’s sofa this morning without a shirt and no sign of the shirt I wore the night before.

Cheers.

a music dvd saturday morning

after my normal saturday morning sexual intercourse and breakfast, i walked up to tower on sunset to buy the belle & sebastian dvd. next thing i knew it was noon and i had watched several bands dvd’s. i thought i would share my thoughts on a couple of them with you. you can buy them all from the artists sites or the usual internet shops.

belle & sebastian. fans only- i have been looking forward to this one for a while. hearing their music chronologically reaffirmed for me that they are still my favorite band recording music today. i would not call this a documentary, as it doesn’t give much insight into the history of the band. it seemed like an art project for them. and face it, their videos are pretty horrifying. i think i paid $14.99 and despite the shortcomings, it was interesting to watch and there are some live concert moments and a couple of interviews that make it worth the money. cool jewel case too.

pavement. slow century- this one is great. it really makes me wish pavement were still together. includes all of their videos, two concerts (including their final performance) and a pretty interesting documentary.

guided by voices. watch me jumpstart- it’s guided by voices, so of course the title is great. i truly love about 40% of gbv’s songs. like 20% of them. the other 40% i can hardly listen to. and for some reason i do not care to see a documentary about them. it kinda made me like them less. the video for glad girls is incredible though. i would recommend it just for the videos. there may be a live show or two also, i cant remember.

wilco. i am trying to break your heart- easily the best of the lot. this could have been scripted. there is actual drama. there is insight to every song being recorded for yankee hotel foxtrot. there is perhaps my favorite paternal rock & roll moment between jeff tweedy and his son on their tour bus. there are numerous reasons why i like this band and this dvd. i would recommend this to fans of wilco and music fans in general.

They are stars. Tim Delaughter is a charisma factory. The show was amazing.

Bad- The 2nd warm-up musician was the roller-skating, guitar playing street performer from Venice Beach. At first I though, “Fitting”. Then I thought, “Please trip, fall and break 6 strings.”

Also Bad- The indie-idiot contingent of Los Angeles. There was some creatively facial haired moron who kept bragging about being: a writer, and on mushrooms. He would not shut up. I wanted to punch him but did not for 2 reasons:

1.I am trying to set a good example for my Israeli and Palestinian readers. Nonviolence is the way.
2.I have taken mushrooms in my early 20’s and I think that being punched out on a hallucinogenic drug could have negatively life-altering effects.
